This Sustainable Development Goal focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water for all. Although this goal is often associated with freshwater resources, it expands into many subdivisions which the North Sea flows and applies to. Furthermore, SDG 6 is closely connected to SDG 14: Life Below Water, which aims to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources in support of sustainable development.
6.1 Safe and affordable drinking water
6.6 Protect and restore water related ecosystems
6.8 Support local engagement in water and sanitation management
Safe and affordable drinking water (SDG 6.1)
As SDG 6.1 implies, freshwater scarcity is becoming an increasingly urgent global challenge. At Campus@Sea, we support our partner and neighbour Elemental Waters who use solar-powered desalination, transforming seawater and sunlight into a sustainable source of freshwater.
Protecting and Restoring Marine Ecosystems (SDG 6.6 & 14.2)
Campus@Sea supports partners and projects that contribute to cleaner water and sustainable water management in and around the North Sea. Healthy marine ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining water quality. Initiatives such as kelp restoration and marine rewilding, with partners Ebbing Tides , Coastruction and MECAL, enhance biodiversity while acting as natural filters that help improve water quality, particularly in harbours and coastal environments. Support local engagement in water and sanitation management (6.8)
SDG 6.8 is a core characteristic of Campus@Sea. We bring together researchers, students, industry partners, local stakeholders, and the general public to collaborate on water-related challenges and learn from one another. Through knowledge sharing, co-creation, and community engagement, we support inclusive participation in the sustainable management and protection of water resources, as well as broader blue economy initiatives.
