From 10 to 20 August, the Allianz World Sailing Championships will take place in The Hague, Scheveningen, right next to Campus@Sea. This event is the second largest sailing event for “open boats” after the Olympic Games. Unlike boats with a cabin, the sailors are literally on the water.
During the previous World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, in 2018, the Netherlands was named the best sailing country in the world. The Dutch sailors can now defend this title on their “home waters”.
Annemiek Bekkering (left in the photo) became world champion in 2018. Together with Dorian van Rijsselberghe, she is this year’s tournament director of the Allianz World Sailing Championships. The former top athlete is currently manager of the Sailing Innovation Centre in The Hague.
Together with Campus@Sea, the Sailing Innovation Centre is one of the participants in the Maritime Testing Ground. This is a 10 x 10 nautical mile test area off the coast of Scheveningen. A data model with current and tide data is available for this 16.5 x 16.5 km area. Proeftuin op de Noordzee is made possible in part by a contribution from the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund.
Last June, The Hague also hosted another major sailing event: The Ocean Race. Read our report on The Ocean Race here.
