October at Campus@Sea

October was an exciting month at Campus@Sea, full of interesting events. Here is an overview of what took place in 10 images:

Networking event organised by Proeftuin op de Noordzee

On 5 October, the inspiring innovations of Proeftuin op de Noordzee were presented. These ranged from hydrogen-powered boats to wave energy and the latest developments in sailing.

Proeftuin op de Noordzee is made possible in part by a contribution from the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund. This initiative has led to fantastic innovations and collaborations between knowledge institutes and SMEs.

More information about Proeftuin op de Noordzee can be found here.

Lobster Robotics tests in North Sea Test Site

This month, Lobster Robotics tested the Lobster Scout in the North Sea Test Site. The Lobster Scout successfully mapped 400 m² of the seabed at a depth of 22 metres. Visibility in the North Sea was excellent, at around 4 metres!

The Lobster Scout collects photographs of the seabed in a fully automated process. The images clearly show vegetation, animals and objects. Individual images are combined to form visual maps. These maps can be used by offshore energy developers, consultants and researchers.

Campus@Sea Event Space

Due to the thick fog, visibility was poor at times.

On the last day of this month, we saw the sun rise over The Hague for once.

We don’t usually get up that early and only see the sun set into the sea during closing drinks at one of the Campus@Sea events.

Sustainable

Since this month, we have new coffee and tea cups at Campus@Sea.

These Paper2Paper cups are fully recyclable and contribute to the sustainable and environmentally friendly approach that we also aim for in our projects.

More information about these cups can be found on the Paper2Paper website. We ordered the cups from Koffiedrukker. They deliver completely CO2-neutral.

Ocean Energy Europe Conference

During the  Ocean Energy Europe conference, we organised a fascinating and interactive workshop on multi-use in the North Sea together with  DMEC.

Together with experts in the fields of aquaculture, nature restoration, floating solar panels, energy storage, tidal kites and wave energy, the workshop participants worked on designs for multi-use.

Bustour EWA

After the OEE conference, we took part in the Ocean Energy tour organised by EWA (Dutch Energy from Water Association).

Symphony WaveSlowmillREDstack and FishFlow Innovations, presented their inspiring innovations.

A day of discovery visiting ocean energy projects already realised in the Netherlands.

BlueLinked

We visited BlueLinked and their TinyOcean initiative, a mini sea containing 6,000 litres of seawater that never needs to be changed thanks to the use of self-cultivated microscopic algae, making antibiotics unnecessary. This makes TinyOcean completely circular.

TinyOcean can be used to farm fish for consumption. Marine animals can be bred for nature restoration.

During this visit, we also discussed exciting future collaborations that we will share soon.

Working visit with CoP North Sea at Offshore Expertise Centre

On the last day of the month, we also attended the working visit organised by CoP North Sea in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat at the Offshore Expertise Centre (OEC) in Stellendam.

We learned more about radars and measuring equipment that are first tested at the Expertise Centre before being installed on offshore transformer platforms at offshore wind farms.

North Sea debate

On the last day of October, the North Sea Debate was organised at Campus@Sea. This was an initiative of  Stichting de NoordzeeDMECECHT and The Hague & Partners. The debate was introduced by Rozanne Spijkerboer, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Groningen. (Prospective) Members of Parliament Harmen Krul, Tjeerd de Groot, Suzanne KrögerWytske Postma and Peter Valstar debated the future of the Dutch North Sea and the three major transitions (nature, food and energy) that are taking place. It was a very successful debate with an engaged audience of around 100 people.
