The North Sea is one of the most strategically important and intensively used marine regions in the world. As demand for renewable energy, sustainable food production and healthy ecosystems continues to grow, the North Sea has become the focal point of three major societal transitions: the energy transition, the food transition and the nature transition.
The energy transition is driving a rapid expansion of offshore renewable energy. The Netherlands has set ambitious targets to achieve 70 GW by 2050. At the same time, the North Sea presents unique opportunities to accelerate the food transition. The expansion of offshore wind farms creates possibilities for multi-use of marine space, where renewable energy generation can coexist with nature-inclusive aquaculture and sustainable food production. Equally important is the nature transition, which focuses on restoring marine ecosystems, protecting biodiversity and integrating nature into economic activities at sea.
Campus@Sea is an innovation hub and field lab dedicated to accelerating sustainable innovation and realizing the potential of the North Sea within these three transitions. By bringing together companies, research and educational institutions, governments and social organisations, Campus@Sea promotes collaboration across five domains: renewable offshore energy, sustainable food from the sea, marine nature development, safety & security, and water sports. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing and innovation, Campus@Sea contributes to the sustainable development of the North Sea.
As we reflect on the innovations we foster, the collaborations we build and the impact we aim to create, an important question emerges: how do these activities contribute to a more sustainable future? One useful framework for answering that question is provided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 global goals offer a shared framework for addressing social, economic and environmental challenges while guiding organisations towards sustainable development. At Campus@Sea, we focus on five Sustainable Development Goals that closely align with our mission and activities:
